James Thompson, Jr. Obituary

Glastonbury, Connecticut - James A. Thompson, Jr. (78) passed away April 7, 2024 surrounded by family at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. He was born in Providence, RI, son of the late James A. Thompson and Agnes F. (Bainton) Thompson of Seekonk, MA. He was married for 53 years to Cheryl (Martin) Thompson of Cumberland, RI, and they lived in Glastonbury, Connecticut for over 35 years.

Jim was a graduate of the Moses Brown School in Providence, RI, and the University of Pennsylvania where he played varsity soccer. He earned a Juris Doctorate at the National Law Center at George Washington University. Jim was an environmental lawyer for the last 50 years and continued to advise and practice until his death. He began his career with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He then spent decades in private practice, most recently working with the firm of Eversheds-Sutherland on a green energy project. Jim was a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Talcott Mountain Science Center, and recently enjoyed volunteering on the Glastonbury Conservation Commission and the Great Meadows Conservation Trust.

Outside of his work, Jim's joy came from spending time outdoors and with his loving family. As a teenager he led whitewater canoeing trips down the Allagash river in Maine. As an adult he grew to love downhill skiing with his sons, largely at Okemo Mountain in Vermont. But the one constant was his love of spending time on Damariscotta Lake in Jefferson, Maine, first as a young camper, and later at the family cottage built by Cheryl's grandfather. He adored being there with his children and grandchildren, watching them enjoy the same place he had loved for years. When not on the lake or skiing, Jim spent every minute he could with his loving wife and cherished following the adventures of his children and grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his spouse Cheryl; his son Scott, Katie (McMahon) Thompson and their children, Annie, Lucy and Claire of Ardmore, Pennsylvania; and his son Jeffrey, Elizabeth (Hopfinger) Thompson, and their children, Chase and Beckett of Durham, North Carolina.
