Douglas McClurg Obituary

Lincoln - Douglas G. McClurg, 75, of Old River Road, passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the faithful husband of Susan (McMahon) McClurg. Douglas and Susan looked forward to celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary this May.

Born the son of the late Donald R. and Gabrielle (Peloquin) McClurg, Doug grew up in Pawtucket, RI where he attended primary school. He was a loyal Boy Scout, attaining the honor of Eagle at the age of fourteen, establishing a lifelong commitment to Scouts' principles. He graduated from Lincoln Senior High School in 1966. He spent his childhood summers on Hog Island, sailing, quahogging, and adventuring on Narragansett Bay. As a member of the Hog Island Improvement Association, he was recognized for his volunteer role managing finances for over twenty years.

Doug was a U.S. Navy veteran enlisting in 1968 - after four years, he was honorably discharged with a good conduct medal and a citation for superior performance of duties. He completed his BSBA degree with honors at Bryant College in 1974 and joined the audit staff of Arthur Young & Company, receiving his CPA certificate in 1979. Two years later, Doug became the Controller of Mossberg Industries Inc. He attended the fall 1984 semester program for Management Development at Harvard Business School and completed his MBA at Bryant College in 1986, where he was recognized in 1990 as Businessperson of the Year. He rose through the ranks at Mossberg, ultimately serving as Chief Executive Officer for eight years until 2000.

Doug enjoyed a beautiful partnership with his wife Susan - dancing together at live shows, traveling with family and friends, and spending time with their daughters in Smithfield, where they resided for thirty years. He volunteered his time with the St. Philip's Church Food Pantry and was a regular donor for the Rhode Island Blood Center. Doug was a member of Trout Unlimited, the Smithfield Sportsman's Club, and the former Pawtucket Lodge of Elks. He loved dogs - especially walking his beloved Samoyed, Luna, and his frequent visits with his four affectionate "granddogs," Olive, Mabel, Peppermint Patty and Liberty.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Amy and Dr. Michael Ruby of Nantucket, MA, and Lauren and Todd Ernst, who reside in Oakton, VA. He was the brother of one loving sister, Nancy McCaughey and brothers Dennis McClurg, William McClurg and the late John McClurg. He was the favorite son-in-law of the late Clara McMahon and a beloved uncle to fourteen nieces and nephews.
