Providence - Stephen P. Harten, 66, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2026. After living with a serious illness, he left this world far too soon for those who loved him.
Steve received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Providence College and his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School.
He was a lawyer with a sharp legal mind and a respectful demeanor. Along with two partners, he co-founded Ratcliffe Burke & Harten LLP in the early 2000s, a firm that later became Ratcliffe Harten Galamaga LLP. He was a member of the RI and MA Bar Associations, and his primary focus was medical malpractice defense. He retired in July 2025.
Steve is survived by his beloved mother, Mary T. (McNelis) Harten of Lincoln, whom he adored. He was predeceased by his father, Francis J. Harten, Jr., D.D.S. He is also survived by his wife, Nancy Hayes Harten of North Kingstown. They were married for 41 years, and Nancy feels so blessed to have made a life and family with Steve.
In addition, he is survived by two daughters, Meghan Henry and her husband Joel, of Lincoln, and Maeve Harten of Los Angeles, CA; one son, Duke Harten of Denver, CO; one sister, Maureen Beebe of Warwick; four brothers, Michael Harten of Cumberland, Paul Harten of Lincoln, Kevin Harten of Salem, MA and Brian Harten of South Kingstown; his four beautiful granddaughters (whom he always lovingly referred to as the Hooligans) Aislinn Henry, Raia Henry, Nola Henry and Emilia Henry; and several nieces and nephews. Steve also leaves behind his best friend since 2nd grade, Bill O'Connell of East Greenwich, as well as others who enjoyed his humor and loved him.
His wife, children and grandchildren were everything to him. He loved them fiercely and unconditionally. They were a source of endless love and pride, and he delighted in every joy and milestone they shared. They will miss the husband, father and Grandad they remember. He knew how fortunate he was to have five wonderful siblings and he honored them by being a good brother who was always there for them when needed. He will be missed by all.
As Steve wished, his funeral and burial will be private. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. To leave a message of condolence, please visit www.bellowsfuneralchapel.com. Arrangements with Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln.
