Paul Jerome Marangos passed away on April 24, 2025 near his home in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was born on July 2, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York to Peter and Anna Marangos. He married Maia Doumato in 1968 and fathered three children, Peter, Victoria and Vanessa. He earned his Ph.D in biochemistry in 1973 from the University of Rhode Island, with a specialty in neurobiology, completed his post-doctoral research at Hoffman La Roche Institute, and served at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland for 13 years. He published 252 research papers and five books, served as founding editor of "The Journal of Molecular Neuroscience," is co-inventor on 14 patents and co-founded five biotechnology companies. He worked tirelessly over the course of his career to find cures for terminal diseases and continued this work through his retirement years, authoring the book "A Roadmap for Curing Cancer, Alzheimer's, and Cardiovascular Disease", which was published in 2017 and drew upon his 45 years of experience in biomedical research and development.
Paul had a passion for cars, classical music, fitness, golf, and the outdoors, specifically during his time spent in Carlsbad, California near the beach.
He is survived by his wife, children, and 7 grandchildren, who were the light of his life, and his brother John Marangos and his family. He will be remembered for his love for his family and God, his contributions to the scientific and biopharmaceutical community, his passion for progress and innovation, and his integrity and charismatic wit.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 10:00 AM in Saint Ephraim Syriac Orthodox Church, 215 Washington Street, Central Falls. Burial will follow in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence. Family and friends are invited, and may attend visiting hours on Friday from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln.
