Maria Escamilla Obituary

Lincoln - Maria Isabel Escamilla, 80, passed away on July 7th at Hope Hospice & Palliative Care, Providence. Her family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the staff there for the compassion and support which allowed Maria to spend several days enjoying time with her family round the clock. The conversations, mealtimes and sleepovers will be cherished by those who were warmly welcomed by Hope Hospice.

Born in Santa Ana, El Salvador, Maria lived in Lincoln for more than 25 years. She was the daughter of the late Carlos Escamilla and Secundina Valencia. Upon her arrival to the United States, Maria provided care as a nanny as well as worked in several manufacturing positions. Her exceptional work ethic and determination to make positive contributions to each employer set a role model for others to follow.

Maria was full of determination and vision. She maintained a very active role at the Providence Senior Center for some time, and sought ways to engage in activities that were interesting. She was very social by nature, and enjoyed taking part in celebrations that offered her creativity and enthusiasm to flourish. She was very proud to attain her US citizenship many years ago.

Maria was a fantastic cook, seamstress, advocate, artist and poet. She enjoyed being busy! Her many photo albums reflect wonderful memories of travels with family and friends.  She made an immediate impression on those who met her as a sweet lady, with lots of energy and spunk.

If leaving this place better than it was when you arrived, then Maria’s was a life well lived. She especially lived by the belief that “los nietos se quieren”. She lived life like she made her recipes, recently stating that the only thing a great soup needs is lots of “amor”. She shared that love with all her family members and even strangers.

She is survived by her 3 children Jose Banos (Jen), Sonia Banos (Carlos), and Vilma Lemus (Roberto); her 6 grandchildren, Dominick & Cristian Banos, Maria Isabel & Tatiana Menendez, Francisco & Alfredo Lemus, as well as 3 great-grandchildren, Dyland, Jayden and Haley Selene Gomez. She leaves a sister, Elena Escamilla, in El Salvador, as well as her niece and nephews.

Following a private funeral service, she was laid to rest in Swan Point Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, and in recognition of her generosity to others, donations may be sent to HopeHealth Hospice, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904 in Maria’s name, or a charity of your choice that supports families in some way.
