John Waycott Obituary

John R. Waycott, affectionately known as “Jack”, passed away March 15th, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late John Waycott and Isabell Waycott. He was the devoted husband of Carol Waycott for 51 years. He attended public school in elementary years, Slater Junior High School, Pawtucket West High School and moved on to earn both his Bachelors and Master’s Degrees from Providence College.

He served his country with honor and dignity in the United States Army. He spent his life as a public servant, ministering the needs of less fortunate citizens. His avid devotion to public education goes beyond his 35 years of teaching. Jack taught Social Studies at Slater Junior High School and continued a second career as Truancy Officer for the Pawtucket School Department.

Jack coordinated an educational program for homeless youngsters at two shelters in the city of Pawtucket within The Pawtucket Housing Authority. He expanded the projects from basic tutoring to innovative language arts program including hands on experience and field trips related to learning experiences. He also served as the District I Coordinator for the We the PeopleProgram, which provides resources and training on the Constitution and Bill of rights for RI Classroom teachers. His work lead to funding for students to travel to Washington DC for the national competition and Bill of Rights.

Jack was passionate about his position of Grant Administrator for the Emergency Shelter of Pawtucket & Central Falls for women and children. His devotion to those in need was clearly demonstrated by his dedication to these shelters. We ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to these shelters.

Besides his loving wife, he leaves a son, David J. Waycott and his wife Kristen (Gilmore) Waycott of Lincoln and a daughter Kristen (Waycott) Murphy and her husband Roderick McGarry of Cumberland.

He is survived by seven loving grandchildren: Brittany Waycott, Zachary Waycott, Mackenzie Waycott, Jack Michael James Murphy, Samantha Murphy, Shea Murphy, and Joseph McGarry.

He also leaves behind many adoring nieces and nephews.
