James “Ray” McCaughey, Jr. Obituary

Lincoln - James R. "Ray" McCaughey, 81, of Lincoln, died Thursday, October 10, 2024 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Nancy (McClurg) McCaughey to whom he had been married for thirty-eight years.

Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late James R. and Rita A. (Daniels) McCaughey, he had resided in Lincoln for the past thirty-four years.

Ray worked as an installer for New England Telephone Co., and later as business manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 2323, and a manufacturer's representative for Bad Dog Tools for many years, before retiring. He was a graduate of Johnson & Wales University.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he proudly served his country during the Vietnam era.

Ray spent many summers of his childhood and youth on Block Island, so when he met Nancy, he felt right at home at her family's home on Hog Island. Many of his most cherished memories were of time spent during the Spring, Summer and Fall on the Island. His passion was sailing around the Island on Narragansett Bay with family and friends on his beloved 25' Santana "License To Keel". Ray's other passion was golfing. He played in several leagues at many golf courses throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, along with annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach.

Ray was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren following in his footsteps and serving in the military. He was also proud as a peacock to brag that his daughter Kate was crowned Miss RI USA 2011.

Besides his wife, he is survived by five children, James R. McCaughey III of New York, Susan Beuck of Florida, Andrew McCaughey of Texas, Jessica Oatley of West Greenwich, and Kate Dingley of Lincoln; two sisters, Mary Ridolfi of Lincoln and Frances Lees of Alabama; one brother, Gerald McCaughey of Taunton; eleven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John "Jack" McCaughey.

His funeral service will be held Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 12 Noon in Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Burial with military honors will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Family and friends are invited, and may attend visiting hours prior to the service from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM.
