Hanom Monofar, 95, of Lincoln, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Sunday, May 11 on Mother's Day, surrounded by her loving family at home.
Born in Homs, Syria, Hanom was one of nine children to Gabriel & Meryam Doumato. She grew up in a loving home, where she shared a close bond with all of her siblings. She joyfully reminisced about her childhood in a house brimming with siblings. Hanom adored her brothers, who would take her to the movies, and her sisters, who chatted and laughed as they sewed together.
She and her siblings learned to sew from their father, who had a tailoring business.
Hanom grew up to marry her father's tailoring partner's son, Okin; they remained married for 74 years, until her passing. Even after she and her siblings married, they remained close and would reunite during many happy summers at their parent's home in Homs, which would be bustling with her siblings, their spouses and many active grandchildren.
In March 1970, Hanom & Okin immigrated to America with their five children. Her oldest brother, the V. Rev. Fr. Abdulahad Doumato, sponsored their move, as he did for nearly 100 relatives, affording them all a better life in America. Here, she put her sewing talents to work and held several positions as a stellar seamstress. Hanom created clothes for top designers, bridal shops and department stores. But her sewing creations did not end there. As the mother of four daughters, she made hundreds of dresses, outfits and accessories that were admired by many. Hanom was known for her impeccable sense of style, a keen eye for fashion, and her love of shopping.
She was a superlative mother and the rock of her family. Hanom always seemed to have boundless energy and talent. She credited her fervent love of her family to continue to propel her work as a consummate homemaker. Hanom enjoyed cooking elaborate Sunday dinners with variety of fare to please her whole family.
She especially loved her grandchildren and expressed her love by buying them toys, taking them to the arcade, organizing and playing games with them and making them laugh with her unique sense of humor. Most importantly, she was their confidante whenever they needed her. Hanom never tired and would say babysitting her grandchildren gave her great joy.
She also loved entertaining all her relatives and even foreign guests. Her tight-knit relationship with her siblings made her well-loved among her nieces and nephews.
Whether it was raising her children and grandchildren, sewing, cooking, shopping or hosting, Hanom seamlessly juggled it all. She was a wise advisor who encouraged her children and grandchildren to be the best they can be.
She will leave a deep void in the hearts of her loving children, Elizabeth and her husband Joseph Nehme, Jouliet and her husband Andrew Bet-Shlimon, Afaf and her husband Elle Ghazal, Paul and his wife Marlin Monofar, the late Fatin Monofar, and Pauline and her husband Bassam Khabbaz; as well as her 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A Mass Service celebrating her life, which will include prayers asking the Lord that He may lead her to her loving parents and siblings in eternal life, will be celebrated Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 10:00 AM in Saint Ephraim Syriac Orthodox Church, 215 Washington Street, Central Falls. Burial will follow in Swan Point Cemetery. Family and friends are invited. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
