Dennis (Denny) Gerald LaBranche, age 79, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, in the intensive care unit at Rhode Island Hospital, surrounded by the love and comfort of his devoted wife, Paula, and his family, who remained steadfastly by his bedside.
Born on September 8, 1946, Dennis lived a life defined by honor, craftsmanship, and an unwavering devotion to his family and country. On January 5, 1968, Dennis enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, answering the call to serve his country during the Vietnam War. As a proud, decorated Marine, his time in the military shaped much of the man he would become-disciplined, resilient, and fiercely loyal. His service to his nation did not end with his active duty; Dennis was a master electrician on the U.S. Naval Base in Newport, Rhode Island. In this role, he directed several critical military contracts, continuing to support and protect the country he so dearly loved.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dennis was an exceptionally talented and proficient woodworker. He possessed a rare artist's eye and a passion for working with exotic woods, which he carefully cultivated from all corners of the globe. Dennis poured his heart into every piece he created, treating his craft not just as a hobby, but as a medium to show love to those around him. To be gifted one of Dennis's custom-made creations was to hold a true masterpiece. Whether it was an elegantly structured wine rack, a beautifully finished cigar box, or a uniquely designed cutting or charcuterie board, each piece was custom-made and bore the mark of his meticulous hands. Those fortunate enough to receive his woodwork will cherish these tangible pieces of his legacy forever. Above all his achievements, Dennis's greatest joy was his family. He was a pillar of support, whether cheering from the sidelines of a baseball field with a proud smile, or sharing quiet moments at home.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Paula, who was his partner in life and his comfort to the very end, and his cherished dog and faithful companion, Bentley. He was the loving and proud father of his two sons, Christopher (Kathy) and Derek (Bethany), and a supportive stepfather to Jimmy (Karen) and Heather (Fred). Dennis was also the ultimate grandfather, affectionately known as "Pepe" to Isabella, Ashley, Frederick, Cooper, Griffin, Cayson, Piper, and Bodhi. He took immense pride in watching his grandchildren grow, inherit his strength, and pursue their passions. His spirit will live on in their laughter, their achievements, and the stories they will share of him for generations to come. He was also the brother of Linda Nordquist and Alan LaBranche.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at 10:00 AM in Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Burial with military honors will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Family and friends are invited, and may attend visiting hours on Tuesday from 4:00 - 7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dennis's memory to Special Olympics Rhode Island, PO Box 7550, Warwick, RI 02887-7550 honoring his lifelong compassion for special needs children.
