Catheryne C. (Bonomolo) Derdiarian

On July 4, 2023, Catheryne Concetta (Kay) Derdiarian, passed away peacefully at the age of 100. Kay was born in New York City of Italian immigrant parents (Frank and Grace Bonomolo). Kay enjoyed a long and fulfilling life, most of it shared with her husband, Kach.

She graduated from Fordham University as a Romance Languages major in 1947, with President Harry Truman giving the commencement address. Kay was fluent in Italian and Spanish. She went on to work as a translator for First National City Bank in New York and later in her life, as a Spanish translator and teacher in Bedford, MA. She was devoted to her family, was a gourmet cook and an accomplished seamstress.

In 1947, she married Kach, her next-door neighbor, after he returned from serving in the US Navy in World War II. Kay and Kach lived their early years in New York City where they enjoyed the Big Band era and were lively dancers. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in August 2022. She and Kach resided in Waterford, Connecticut for 38 years where they were avid sailors. They sailed their Block Island 40 yawl that Kach built, along the entire east coast from Nova Scotia to Florida, with New London, CT as their home port.

Kay leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Merle Krueger, a son, Stephen Derdiarian, her grandsons and their families, Charles Derdiarian, Brian Derdiarian, and Evan Krueger, and four great-grandchildren.

Kay and Kach requested that their ashes be spread together during a sail on Long Island Sound where they spent so many happy years together. Captain Kach's and First Mate Kay's zest for life will be celebrated by family and friends privately, as will their spirit of always charting their own course in life.
