Carol Smith Obituary

North Providence - Carol F. (Fanning) Smith, 87, of North Providence, formerly of Lincoln, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the beloved wife of the late Harvey J. Smith, and cherished companion of Donald Souza.

Born in Pawtucket, Carol was the daughter of the late Edward and Jeannette (Delgarde) Fanning. She lived many years in Lincoln before moving to North Providence three years ago.

A licensed practical nurse, Carol dedicated her career to caring for others at Miriam Hospital in Providence and the former Cartie's Health Center in Central Falls. Her compassion extended beyond her professional life into her community, where she left an indelible mark on the lives of many.

Carol was a joyful and vibrant presence at the Smithfield Senior Center, where she volunteered and participated in activities for over 20 years. She helped organize events, led committees, and was known for her creativity-especially the chocolate lollipops she lovingly made for many parties and the beautiful baskets she crafted for fundraisers. She was adored by everyone there, not just for her tireless energy and generosity, but also for her approachable style and down-to-earth personality making her easy to connect with.

Whether it was bowling, bocce, Hi-Lo Jack, or cornhole with friends, Carol embraced life fully and found joy in every moment. She cherished music-often enjoying Philharmonic events with friends-and was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially of professional tennis, baseball, and football, always ready to cheer on her favorite players and teams. Avidly curious and always learning, Carol was a lifelong reader who participated in several book clubs over the years.

Carol was the kind of person who always showed up-smiling and genuinely happy to see you. She had a great sense of humor, always ready to share a laugh or offer a comforting word. She was known for dropping by friends' homes for a cup of tea and was always up for a new adventure.

Above all, Carol was deeply devoted to her family. She was the proud mother of Douglas Smith and Michelle, of Irvine, California, and Dwayne Smith and Jodi, of Narragansett; sister of Ronald Fanning of Smithfield; and adored grandmother of Cameron, Kyle, Reiver, and Fenway Smith. She also held a special place in her heart for her grandpup, Finn, who brought her endless joy.

A former PTA president during her children's school years, Carol led by example-giving her time, energy, and heart to every community she touched. Her legacy is one of warmth, kindness, humor, and generosity.

Carol's funeral will be held Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 9:00 AM from Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Saint Jude Church, 301 Front Street, Lincoln. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Pawtucket. Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday from 4:00 - 7:00 PM.
