Lincoln – Alzira Leone “Mama Leone”, 84, of Greenwood Lane, formerly of The Bronx, NY, passed away Friday, January 24, 2020 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence, RI surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Vincenzo Leone.
Born in Sangemil, Portugal, the daughter of the late Armando and Laurinda (Sales) Alves, she emigrated to the United States in 1962, settling in New York City where she met her husband. She lived in Manhattan and the Bronx before moving to Lincoln 4 years ago to live with her daughter and family. Alzira came to the United States as a nanny for the Brazilian Ambassador to the United Nations. She worked as a cook for the nuns at Marymount School on 5th Avenue. She also babysit and helped raise many nieces and nephews.
She was an unbelievable cook, no matter what time of the day you showed up in her house she made sure to cook up something for you and was the family’s “unofficial tour guide” to anyone who visited her in New York.
She is survived by one daughter, Maria Cunha, and her husband Paul, of Lincoln; one son, Vince Leone, and his wife Maria, of The Bronx, New York; and four grandchildren who she absolutely adored, Nicholas Leone, Dominic Cunha, Anthony Cunha and Joey Cunha. She was the sister of the late Joao Alves, Genesio Alves and Leopoldo Alves.
