Alyce Louise Gorman (Scott) passed away on October 13, 2023, at the age of 97. Alyce was born in Westerly, RI on June 28, 1926. She was the first of the three daughters of Louise (Nelson) and George Scott. Alyce graduated from Pawtucket West High School (Shea) before attending Comptometer School. She worked briefly for the Narragansett Electric Company and, for many years, the United States Post Office.
Alyce married Hugh Gorman on April 7, 1951 and raised-in her words-"seven wonderful children." Alyce and Hugh purchased their first house in the Fox Point section of Providence and later moved to Lincoln, R.I. She loved having her home serve as "control central" for her family, and was especially distressed when others lost their homes to fire, earthquake, storms, and other disasters.
Alyce enjoyed playing cards and games with her family, as well as visiting new places, with fond memories of her travels to Ireland and Israel as well many places around the United States. In retirement, she enjoyed bus trips with her husband and friends, visiting her sister in California, spending time with grandchildren, and exploring on weekend getaways with her daughters. In her later years she enjoyed just being driven anywhere. She often had to remind people that she was "Alyce with a y," and sometimes, if you got to know her, she would tell you the story of how she lost the "i."
She is survived by her sister Ruth (Scott) Kaye and seven children--Patricia, Catherine (José Cerritelli), Joan Gorman (José Ruiz), Hugh Gorman (Bonnie Bilka), Jean (Fakhreddin Entezary), Alice (Toni Akin), and James Gorman (Christine O'Brien). She was the very proud grandmother of Laura, Mark, Jesse, Serena, Erika, Zoe and the late Noah Gorman, and the very very proud great grandmother of Juniper, Linnea, Heather, and Radian. Alyce was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh, and her sister Georgia (Scott) Messier.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Relatives and friends are invited, and may call Monday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Meeting Street.
