Vivian A. (Trench) Souza

West Barnstable, MA – Vivian A. (Trench) Souza died peacefully on Sunday, August 4 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. She was 89 years old.

   Mrs. Souza was the wife of the late Edward J. Souza and had been living at the Linden Ponds retirement community in Hingham, Mass. for the past nine years. She was the daughter of the late Edwin and Gertrude (Bumpus) Trench of Bourne, Mass.

   She leaves a daughter, Marcia Holmes Green and her husband Alan of Cumberland, R.I.; four grandchildren, Nathan Green and his wife Annie of Lincoln, R.I., Alexander Green and his wife Ashley of Bronxville, N.Y., Jess Holmes of Leominster, Mass. and Kira Holmes of Madison, Wis.; and six beloved great-grandchildren, Helen, Charlotte, George, Vivian, Leo and Zachary.

   Mrs. Souza had been previously married to Cecil Holmes and was the mother of Douglas Trench Holmes who died in 2017.

   Mrs. Souza, who in retirement had wintered in Ocala, Florida, had a long career as a commercial insurance executive on Cape Cod, working for Bryden & Sullivan, and then Dowling & O’Neill agencies. She held the highly regarded industry designations of CPCU, Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, and CIC, Certified Insurance Counselor. In 1976, she was named Cape Cod's Professional Business Woman of the Year.

   She was a skilled seamstress and quilt-maker, 4-H leader, and member for many years of West Parish Church in West Barnstable.

   A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 10 at the Crocker Park Cemetery, Church Street, West Barnstable, Mass. Details about a Service of Remembrance at Four Corners Community Chapel in Cumberland, R.I. will be announced later.
