Pawtucket – Thomas E. Toner, 89, of Pawtucket, died Friday, February 22, 2019 at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol.
Born in Cumberland, a son of the late Edward and Anne (Burke) Toner, he had lived in Pawtucket for most of his life.
Mr. Toner was the owner of State Line Auto Brokers, Attleboro, retiring five years ago. He had previously worked as a self-employed bakery salesman; an attendant at Foxborough State Hospital; and as a salesman at Pierce Chevrolet.
He was a tremendous athlete, playing semi-pro baseball, and was an avid runner, completing fifteen marathons in his lifetime, and participating in the Senior Olympics. He was a forty-five year Friend of Bill W.
An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served in the 82nd Airborne, attaining the rank of Sergeant.
He is survived by one daughter, Kathie Ann Toner, and her companion Christopher Salt, of Westport, Massachusetts; one grandson, Ryan Toner Walkden, and his companion, Colleen Maroney; and one great granddaughter, Julianne Grace Walkden. He was the brother of the late Eleanor Toner.
A Celebration of his life will be held Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Relatives and friends are invited, and may call prior to the service from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. A graveside service, with military honors, will be held Friday, March 1, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Cemetery, 900 Mendon Road, Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517 would be appreciated.
