Cumberland - Leopold “Paul” E. Poirier, 88, of Hines Road, died Sunday, December 24, 2017, at the Holiday Retirement Home, Manville. He was the beloved husband of Claire R. (Arone) Poirier. Mr. & Mrs. Poirier had been married for sixty-four years.

Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Joseph and Andrea (Roy) Poirier, he was a lifelong resident of Cumberland.

Mr. Poirier was the owner, with his father, of the former Poirier Construction Co., building many homes in Cumberland until his retirement.

He was educated at Sacred Heart Academy, Kenyon Business School and R.I. School of Design.

Mr. Poirier was a former member of the Cumberland School Committee; past chairman of the Cumberland Minimum Housing Code, Cumberland Building Inspector, past chairman of the Cumberland Building Board of Appeals, and served on the Cumberland Democratic Town Committee.

He was a past Grand Knight of St. Thomas Council, K. of C., a fourth degree knight of Delaney Assembly, past treasurer of the Cumberland Terrace Association and the Cumberland Lions Club, member of the Boys & Girls Club of Cumberland-Lincoln Alumni Association, the R.I. Home Builders Association, and Cumberland Post #14, American Legion.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he served in the Fleet Marine Force Atlantic from 1947-1954, and was honorably discharged. He was a communicant of St. Aidan Church, Cumberland.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Lynn Free of Brookfield, CT, Holly-Anne Keenan, and her husband Peter, of Greenville, Alicia Haworth, and her husband Stanley, of Cumberland, and Michelle Sullivan of Cumberland; two sons, Patrick Poirier, and his wife Kristen, of Concord, N.H., and Paul Poirier, and his wife Jessica of Cumberland; two sisters, Yvette Brousseau and Teresa Cabana; ten grandchildren; and one great grandchild. He was the brother of the late Raymond Poirier.

His funeral will be held Friday, December 29, 2017 at 8:45 a.m. from Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln, with the celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Aidan Church, 1460 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Relatives and friends are invited, and may call Thursday from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to The Cove Center, c/o FBO – Apple Blossom House, 610 Manton Avenue, Providence, R.I. 02909 would be appreciated.
