South Kingstown – John A. Whatmough, Jr., 85, of Wakefield, died Friday, March 2, 2018, at South County Hospital, Wakefield, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy A. (Davis) Whatmough. Mr. & Mrs. Whatmough had been married for fifty-eight years.
Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late John A. and Christina (Pinkerton) Whatmough, he had lived in Pawtucket, before moving to Wakefield twenty-nine years ago.
Mr. Whatmough had worked as a banker at R.I. Hospital Trust, Pawtucket Savings & Trust and Fairlawn Credit Union, retiring in 1989.
He was a graduate of Central Falls High School, Class of 1950. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War.
An avid fisherman, he was known to everyone as “Narrow River Jack”. He was a member of Jenks Lodge #24, F. & A.M., and a member of the Masonic Veterans Association of R.I. He was a member of the Church of the Ascension, Wakefield.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Sandra L. Whatmough of Pawtucket; and one son, Scott J. Whatmough, and his wife Annie, of Cumberland. He was the brother of the late Beverly M. Scully.
His funeral service will be held FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Moshassuck Cemetery, Central Falls. Relatives and friends are invited, and may call prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to the Church of the Ascension, 370 Main Street, Wakefield, R.I. 02879, would be appreciated.
