Lincoln - Jean Frances (Herde) Smart, 90, of Tiverton, and formerly of Lincoln, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River. She was pre-deceased by Robert L. Smart, her husband of fifty-nine years. She was the daughter of the late George Fitchette Herde and Mary Elizabeth (Woodworth) Herde.
She is survived by her children, Howard R. “Buzz” Smart, and his wife Joanne, of Wakefield, Roberta S. “Bobbie” Cox, and her husband Vernon, of Sanford, Maine, Harold R. “Harry” Smart, and his wife Linda, of Portsmouth, and Andrew D. Smart, and his wife Christina, of Raleigh, North Carolina. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Alison, Keaton, Christopher and his wife Katie, and Shanna; and her great grandchildren, Deston, Devon, Tadon and Layla; her sister, Marjorie H. Roberts of Hemet, California; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Grace H. Hatfield, Byron E. Herde and Manuel F. Herde.
Jean was a graduate of George Washington University, and worked as a Physical Education Teacher in the D.C. area, and in Scituate, R.I. before she started raising her family.
She was active in the Girl Scouts for many years, serving as a volunteer leader and trainer, as well as a summer camp staff member. Jean was also a member of Lime Rock Baptist Church, where she was a youth group leader and secretary. She was a Cub Scout leader and a member of a very active bowling league.
Jean enjoyed knitting, gardening, baking, cooking and completing jigsaw puzzles. She loved animals, especially the many pets she had throughout her life, and the birds she fed outside her window each winter. She also enjoyed traveling with her family in her later years.
A Celebration of Her Life will be held Friday, February 16, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. in the Historic Swan Point Chapel, 585 Blackstone Boulevard, Providence. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory to the Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England, the Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America, or to a youth organization of your choice would be appreciated.
